Highland Councillor appointed to influential European committee
Highland Councillor Maxine Smith, who is the SNP councillor for Cromarty Firth, has been appointed to serve on the European Committee of the Regions.
Councillor Smith was selected by the SNP Group on the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) to represent their interests on the influential committee, which meets in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.
She joins The Highland Council Convener Councillor Sandy Park on the European Committee of the Regions. He was also nominated by Cosla.
Councillor Smith said: "I am delighted and honoured to have been chosen by the Scottish National Party Group Leaders on Cosla to represent them on this influential European Committee. This is also good for the Highlands, as I will be able to take to Europe local and regional issues that affect us here.
“Geographically we are very different here to other parts of Scotland and this needs to be taken into account by Europe. I will do the best job I can. It will mean a trip to Brussels every 2 months or so, but I am looking forward to the challenge."
