Death of Long Service Highland Councillor

Long-serving Highland Councillor David Munro from Inverness has died at the age of 56. He had been receiving care at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, continuously since taking ill in late June.

Councillor Munro was elected to the former Inverness District Council in May 1980 and to The Highland Council at successive elections in 1995, 1999 and 2003, representing Raigmore.

An active member of the Scottish Labour Party, Councillor Munro is survived by his wife, Ann, two sons and a daughter.   He was secretary of the local branch of UCATT.

Councillor Munro was Vice-Chairman of the Council’s Transport Environmental and Community Services and was the Council’s spokesman on Consumer Protection and Public Health.

He was also Vice-Chairman of the Council’s Inverness Area TEC Services Committee.

Provost William Smith, Chairman of The Highland Council’s City of Inverness and Area Committee, said: “Councillor Munro was a big man who made a big contribution to the council and to his local community.  We will miss him greatly and we extend to his family our sincerest condolences at this time.”

There will be no by-election as Councillor Munro’s passing is within six months of the next Council election on 3 May, next year.

Over the past few months his duties have been carried out by other local councillors.
