Young performers prepare for Scottish première

To celebrate WWF-UK’s 50th anniversary this year, the environmental charity has commissioned a new musical which will have its Scottish première in Aviemore on Saturday 19th November during a day featuring 300 young Highland musicians performing in three concerts.

Taking centre stage will be young musicians and singers from all over the Highlands who form the Highland Youth Orchestra and Youth Choir.  They will be joined by pupils from Kingussie High School and Alvie, Aviemore, Gergask, Kingussie and Newtonmore primary schools to bring a colourful selection of characters to life. As the music unfolds the characters begin to doubt the sustainability of our life but it ends on an upbeat note with a powerful reminder that we really do have the power to change the world.

Written by Peter Rose and Anne Conlon with narration by radio presenter Jenny Farish, One Sun One World is a collaboration between WWF Scotland and The Highland Council in partnership with the MacDonald Aviemore Highland Resort.

Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland said: “We are very excited to see the fruition of all the hard work by teachers and pupils when One Sun One World premieres.  The musical is a fitting celebration of WWF’s 50th anniversary as it focuses on important issues such as the consequences of climate change and our use of the planet’s natural resources. Our work on education aims to inspire everyone to protect the natural world so that people and nature thrive – and to give them the knowledge and skills to make a difference.”

Councillor Sandy Park, Convener of The Highland Council, said: “I am really looking forward to the première which is a culmination of months of hard work of everyone involved. One Sun One World is a very creative way to highlight important environmental issues and at the same time involve young people in all aspects of performing.  I am sure all those taking part will enjoy the experience and the audience will give them great support.”

The One Sun One World performance will start at 2pm at the Aviemore Highland Resort.

At 5pm it will be the turn of the Highland Youth Pipe Band, the Highland Schools Wind Band and the Highland Youth String Orchestra to perform in the second of three concerts taking place. Each group will be performing a varied and challenging programme of music to highlight their ability after a year of hard work and rehearsals.

The final concert of the day will take place a 7.15pm and will be a foot-tapping, hand clapping experience featuring Coisir G, the Highland Youth Big Band and the ceilidh band, `snas.

Tickets for all of these concerts are now available.  A single ticket costs £8 or £4 for school pupils, a double tickets is available for £14 or £7 and a triple ticket costs £18 and £9.  To book please visit www.highland-young-musicians.com or www.thebooth.co.uk
