Highland’s new Youth Convener
Stuart Davidson from Nairn this week took up his new role as Highland’s Youth Convener. His full-time post is a one year bursary, running until September 2012. He will be based at the Education, Culture and Sport Service’s Inverness office but will work throughout the Highlands with partner agencies.
As Youth Convener, Stuart will offer a consistent link for Elected Members and senior officials to seek young people’s views, will be the sounding board for youth issues in the Highlands and will have a direct line to policy makers and decision takers. He will attend Council and Planning Partner meetings where appropriate, with full voting rights on the Education, Culture and Sport Committee and Joint Committee for Children and Young People.
Stuart (18) is the fifth Highland Youth Convener and takes over from Gemma Mackintosh from Ardersier. Gemma is now planning to study and pursue a career in law.
Stuart, who attended Nairn Academy, was previously Chair of Highland Youth Voice (the elected youth parliament for Highland) and has a wealth of experience in representing young people. He is currently treasurer for Nairn Youth Forum and holds positions on several community organisations, including Nairn River Community Council, Nairnshire Partnership and Nairn Drug and Alcohol Forum. He is also a volunteer at Nairn Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
Stuart said: “Stuart said: “This post provides me with the opportunity to present the views of the younger generation to the council. I intend to create better opportunities and a positive outlook for the youth and combat the stereotypical image of the younger generation.”
Convener of The Highland Council, Councillor Sandy Park will introduce Stuart during Full Council on Thursday (1 Sept). He said: “Stuart was an outstanding candidate and brings with him enthusiasm, knowledge and the skills he has already gained in his role of Youth Voice Chair and his active involvement with community groups in Nairn. Earlier this year members agreed to enhance the participation and involvement of young people in the delivery of council services. Stuart will be attending all strategic meetings and will working closely with our directors to ensure young people’s views are taken into account. This is a very important role and I have no doubt Stuart will rise to the challenge.”
Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of Education Culture and Sport Committee added: “I am sure Stuart will enjoy his new role and will prove to be an excellent champion for young people. We look forward to working with him.”
The Education, Culture and Sport service also supports young people’s involvement through Highland Youth Voice, Area Youth Forums and Pupil Councils in High Schools.
