Support for rail crossing announcement

The Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Drew Hendry and TEC Committee Chairman, Councillor Graham Phillips have expressed their delight following the announcement made last week that Network Rail are to improve the safety at Highland railway crossings.

The successful trial of a new level crossing system on single rail lines means Network Rail will now begin a roll out to improve safety at all open level crossings. The first four Highland crossings that will be upgraded are at Corpach, Broar, Kirkton and Dalchalm.  Also included in the improvement programme is the crossing at Halkirk which will have a conventional barrier system installed.

As well as giving his support to the announcement and recognising the commitment given by Network Rail, Councillor Drew Hendry has written to congratulate and thank MSP Dave Thompson for his long standing campaign to draw attention to safety concerns.

He said: “Launching the high profile campaign and keeping momentum going has been very important and has no doubt had a direct bearing on the research, trial and introduction of this new safer system.  People need to have the confidence when they travel on our road and rail networks that all their safety concerns are properly addressed. I am delighted that the hard work of everyone involved has resulted in this very positive announcement.”

Chairman of TEC Services, Councillor Graham Phillips added:  "The council has been working closely with Network Rail on these matters and the priority and main focus for everyone involved has been to make the crossings safe for all users. Therefore I am delighted that the roll out will begin and I look forward to seeing the new crossing system in place.”

“I also want to express my warm appreciation of Dave Thompson's efforts, and congratulate him on the outcome after such a long time.  I have always supported his campaign, especially after a train went past my own nose as I started on a level crossing I thought was safe.”
