Inverness pupils to benefit from Scottish Government cycling, walking and safer street programme

Funding for five safer routes to schools projects in the Inverness area has been given the go-ahead by members of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee.

Just under one quarter of £258,000 funding from the Scottish Government’s “Cycling, Walking and Safer Street Programme” - provided to The Highland Council for 2012/13 - has been allocated to road safety projects at Smithton, Beauly, Hilton, Duncan Forbes, Foyers and Charleston Primary Schools

Members of the City Committee agreed that estimated project costs of £51,000 can be allocated from the Scottish Government funds to Inverness safer routes to schools projects including:

City Leader and Chairman of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee Councillor Ian Brown said: “The health and safety of our children is vitally important and I am delighted that we are seeing improvements through the Inverness safer routes to schools programme.

“We hope that by providing safer routes to schools pupils and parents will be encouraged to ditch the car for the healthier and environmentally sustainable modes of transport - cycling and walking.”
