A 890 Stromeferry Bypass reopens

At 5 pm today (Thursday) the A 890 Stromeferry Bypass, which links Lochcarron with Lochalsh, was reopened following removal of a dangerous overhanging crag on a rockface one mile west of the Avalanche Shelter.

Contractors, TRAC were on site from 8 am to work with The Highland Council team to remove the hazard.

The road was closed at 10 am on Christmas Day when 15 tonnes of rock fell on to the kerbside.  Another 50 tonnes were cleared from the hillside before the overhang was removed.

The incident happened about 1 mile from the location of the major rockfall which resulted in closure of the A890 between Late December 2011 and early April.
