Prize composter presented

Towards the end of last year The Highland Council held a series of Energy Advice Roadshows in the Aird and Loch Ness ward to offer householders advice on how to better manage their energy consumption with a view to saving money and helping reduce the environmental impact related to energy consumption.

A number of organisations took part in the event including Scottish and Southern Energy, Community Energy Scotland and staff from the Council’s Energy and Sustainability and Waste Management Departments.

The roadshows, which took place in Beauly, Drumnadrochit, Fort Augustus and Farr, were attended by a wide range of people looking for advice on a wide range of topics.  A number of schools also took the opportunity to come along and engage with the experts on hand.

During the roadshows, in anticipation of the introduction of a new blue bin kerbside recycling service throughout the Inverness area, the Waste Management team ran a competition.  Contestants were asked to guess the number of plastic bottles contained in the blue wheeled bin on display. This generated a great deal of discussion with guesses ranging from just under a hundred to around five hundred. The actual answer was one hundred and sixty seven and the closest guess was from Fiona Berry from Experience 4x4 near Duntelchaig, just outside Inverness.

Chairman of The Highland Council’s TEC Services Committee, Councillor John Laing said; “Fiona’s prize, a Green Johanna composter is specifically designed to compost cooked food waste.  This will help reduce the amount of organic waste that is sent to landfill and will help Fiona, her family and business do a little bit more to reduce their environmental impact.”
