Work commences on steeple refurbishment

Work is underway on a major refurbishment of the 300-year-old Inverness Steeple.  The Highland Council has appointed Laing Traditional Masonry of Kirkcaldy to carry out the work over the next five months. The estimated cost is £550,000.

Scaffolding is currently being erected on the Grade A-listed building to enable the contractor to access areas of worn or damaged stone that require to be replaced or repointed and to remove loose masonry. In order to complete safe and proper erection of the scaffold it will be necessary for the contractor to form two temporary enclosed and protected walkways. One will be positioned on Church Street and the other on Bridge Street, both immediately adjacent and abutting the current site enclosure.

These temporary walkways are purely to facilitate the erection of the substantial scaffold structure and will be removed once the scaffold erection is completed in approximately two weeks time.

Other works will include repairs to the clock face and bell mechanisms (only one of the three bells currently chimes).
