Improvement to Dingwall woodland walk

The Craig Wood path from Woodlands Road to Old Evanton Road in Dingwall has had a facelift with a new smooth stone surface now making it possible for less able people to enjoy the popular route through the woods and the scenic views.

The project, costing £12,000, was arranged and managed by Philip Waite, Highland Council Access Officer employing Highland Conservation Limited of Strathpeffer to build the path.

The original path was muddy, slippy and uneven making it very difficult for anyone with mobility problems.  The Craig Wood Path was one of the most important paths in Dingwall, chosen as Core Paths during consultations in 2007. The link to Urquhart Road is intended to be improved soon to complete an easy access circuit.

The path upgrade is part of the Highland Core Path Improvement Programme which is 45% Highland LEADER funded. The Mid Ross Path Volunteers on behalf of Dingwall Community Council identified the need and applied to the Programme for funding.

Local Councillor, Margaret Paterson said: “I am delighted that the Craig Wood path has had a much needed facelift.  The path is part of the round Dingwall walk and many people use it.  I have already had a number of people phoning to say what a difference the work has made.”

Councillor Angela MacLean added:  “Having such an accessible and scenic woodland path is a great asset for the town. The improvements mean that now even more people will be able to come along and enjoy this very scenic and popular route.”
