Pupil sees her road safety themed floor game produced

A pupil from St Joseph’s Primary School in Inverness has won a Highland wide Primary School competition to design a road safety floor game.  The game is a fun way for pupils to play and teaches them about road safety and encourages them to walk and cycle to and from school.

Rachel Seed, P7, has had her winning design produced into a 3 metre square floor game which will now be used to help teach road safety messages to school pupils from across the Highlands.

The Highland Council’s Road Safety Unit, who ran the competition earlier this year asked primary pupils from across the region, to design a road safety floor game to educate prospective players on safe ways they can travel to and from school.

Entries had to be designed on a piece of square paper, size 30cm x 30cm and had to feature road safety and active travel to/from school messages.

The Council’s Assistant Road Safety Officer Debbie Tuckwell came along to St Joseph’s Primary School to present Rachel with a large-scale produced version of the game. She said: “We had an overwhelming 130 entries from Highland schools.  All of the designs were very imaginative and used clever and creative ways to get anyone playing to learn about road safety and active ways to travel each day to their schools.  However Rachel’s design really stood out and when we tested it out recently during our Junior Road Safety Officers Induction Days, everyone who played really enjoyed it.  We have produced several full-scale copies of the floor game and they will be a great help in getting young people to think about road safety issues while at the same time having fun playing the game.”
