Demolition contract begins at Nairn Community Centre
Work has begun today (Tuesday) on the demolition of Nairn Community Centre. Morrison Construction have the £80,000 contract to clear the site on King Street, with an anticipated completion by the end of June.
Phase I of the demolition will involve stripping of the interior of the building and this will last for 3 weeks. Phase II will involve the removal of the two Nissan huts. Phase III will be the demolition of the main building.
Under Phases I and II, 33 parking spaces in the Library Car Park will be out of use to the public as they are needed for the contractor’s compound. Under Phase III, a further 16 parking spaces will be out of use to the public in the Falconers Lane Car Park and the Courthouse Lane exit will be closed to traffic.
Advance notices will be displayed in the car parks, advising of the temporary loss of parking.
No external work will take place over the Curtis Cup period - 8 -10 June and the work should be completed before the Scottish Open golf championships take place in mid July.
The site office will be located at the former Social Work Office in King Street.
A spokesman for the Council said: “We recognise that the temporary loss of town centre car parking spaces will cause short-term inconvenience. However, we are pleased that work is now ready to start on a long-awaited project, which will open up opportunities for redevelopment and revitalise the town centre.”
Once the community centre site is cleared, it will be used in the short-term for additional car parking.
Work is also underway to clear the disused Co-op petrol station.
