Thurso to host surfing championships and Wave North festival
The Highland Council is supporting the UK Pro Surfing Championships being held on the weekend of 27-28 October in Thurso.
The national surfing competition will merge with the Wave North Festival to create a weekend of action sports, live music and local Arts and Crafts activities.
The event will see the UK’s top surfers competing for the UK title and in addition some of the UK's top Skateboard and BMX professionals will be performing at our purpose built skate park located at the harbour car park.
This is the first time that so many champion extreme sports professionals have come to Thurso and organisers expect over 3,000 people to attend the weekend festival.
An onsite music stage will feature live bands and there will be Arts and Craft activities to showcase local products.
Free onsite coaching is available for the local community to learn how to skatebaord and BMX ride from the professionals.
Over 100 of the UK’s best surfers will descend on Thurso for the action-packed weekend, to compete for the UK Professional Surfing title.
The event will featuring the Relentless Super Services Surf competition with the UK’s best surfers competing to win on the world famous Thurso surf break.
The event will showcase Thurso as one of the best surfing locations in the UK and promote the regions outdoor lifestyle.
Local junior surfers will be joining the professionals to compete in the Surfing competition to win the Junior Thurso Championship title.
Councillor Gail Ross, Caithness Civic Leader, said: “This promises to be a terrific weekend and will certainly put Thurso on the map as a top venue for surfing. It will provide our community with a very welcome economic boost.”
A taste of the event program includes-
Saturday 27th October will feature- Glasgow based ‘Shaka Events’ performing a DJ set complete with projected skate/surf images onto the onsite Skate ramp where professional skateboarders and BMX riders from ‘Team Extreme’ will be on hand to provide workshops alongside surfing lessons provided by Thurso Surf School over the weekend.
Saturday evening will include an outdoor film screening of ‘The Endless Winter-A Very British Surf Movie’. The evening concludes at the Newmarket Bar with a Pirate themed Wave North Halloween Party in with live music from Dundee based The Hazey Janes and We Are All Outsiders from Inverness
The action starts at 10 AM on Saturday 27th October and runs through till 5 PM on Sunday 28th October.
