Good news for Fort William with £7 million commitment to new Gaelic Medium primary

The Highland Council has confirmed its plans to spend £7 million on a new standalone Gaelic Medium Primary School in Fort William.

The Council has chosen Ardgour Road, Caol, as the location for the new school, believing that it represents the best value for the Council and the local community.

The Council had also considered a site at Blar Mor but ruled this out because of the significant additional costs of site preparation, including the removal of peat.

Further good news given to the Council is that the £500,000 of community benefit deriving from the development by Miller Construction of Blar Mor can be used for community projects outwith the Blar Mor site, including at Lochaber High School.

Councillor Alasdair Christie, Chairman of the Adult and Children’s Services Committee said: “This is great news for Fort William.  The community is getting a state of the art new Gaelic Medium Primary School, which represents an investment of £7 million from the Council.  This is good news for parents and it is good news for the construction industry in these challenging times.
“It is also good news that the £500,000 of community benefit from the Blar Mor development can be used for a community project outwith the immediate area.  A good day all round for Fort William.”
