Council supports Skye air service study
The Highland Council has agreed to contribute £5,000 towards a new study into the potential of introducing a scheduled air service from Skye.
Sharing the costs of the £15,000 study are Highlands and Islands Enterprise and HITRANS, who will manage the commission of the study. The study brief will include:
Skye has been without a scheduled air service since 1988 when a Loganair service to Glasgow was ended due to lack of support.
The existing airstrip at Broadford is 771m long and 23m wide and is not able to accommodate the usual small scheduled aircraft such as a Twin Otter without an extension.
Councillor Drew Millar, Skye, fully supported the contribution to the study, highlighting that Skye is one of the few areas in the Highlands with a significant population without a scheduled air service.
Skye, he said, would benefit hugely from the introduction of a service, which provided travellers with the opportunity to connect to a wide range of destinations.
