Crowds enjoy pipes and drums spectacular in Dingwall
Friday, on a lovely sunny afternoon (5 April 2013) young pipers and drummers of the Army Cadet Force performed a 'Beating Retreat' on Dingwall High Street which was enjoyed by the crowds who turned up to enjoy the colourful and rousing spectacle.
The 'Beating Retreat' came at the end of seven days intensive training at Cameron Barracks in Inverness, where the Cadets have been receiving extra tuition in the arts of piping and drumming from instructors from the Regular and Territorial Army and the Cadet Forces.
Ross and Cromarty Lord Lieutenant Mrs Janet Bowen took the Salute. She was joined by guests including the Convener of The Highland Council Jimmy Grey.
He said: “The massed band coming down the High Street was a wonderful sight and sound. The youngsters did a great job and their performance went down really well with all the spectators and there was a great atmosphere. The motto of the Army Cadet Force is 'To Inspire to Achieve' and it was obvious the expert tuition the cadets had received over the week certainly helped them do so well.”
The first ‘Beat the Retreat’ event took place in Dingwall in April 2006 and now it has become an annual event in the Dingwall Calendar.
National Cadet Piping Executive Officer, Major Jim Stout said: “After a week of intensive instruction it is great for the cadets to get the chance to put what they have learned into practice and to entertain the public at the same time.”
