Council recognises success of two Highland Premier League football sides
The Highland Council Leaders have paid tribute to the “incredible” achievement of the two Highland sides that play in the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League in sitting at the top of the table, behind Celtic.
Convener Jimmy Gray is thrilled at seeing the two Highland sides sitting proudly near the top of the league and is looking forward to two Highland derbies over the next two weeks.
He said: “It is terrific to see the two Highland sides doing so well. The teams have come a long way in a short time and are a huge credit to the Highlands. They have certainly put us on the footballing map. I have watched a lot of football over the last few months, including games involving Wick Academy, Brora Rangers and Nairn County and these games have also been some of the best football ever played in the Highland League which is clearly benefitting from players coming through the Ross County and Caley Thistle ranks.
The Highlands is clearly one of the best places in Scotland to watch live football.”
Councillor Margaret Paterson, Dingwall, who is an honorary life member of Ross County, said: “I am incredibly proud of the achievement of our sides. My own side, Ross County have made a marvellous start to their Premier League career and I have to pinch myself to see them sitting near the top of the table.”
The Council is hosting a civic reception for Ross County on Monday 25 March at the Council Chamber, Dingwall, when the players and club officials/staff will be guests of honour in recognition of last season’s promotion as Division 1 Champions. Councillor Paterson said: “This is a long-awaited recognition of the club’s recent successes and in particular in gaining promotion of the Premier League.”
