Highland Seashore Roadshow rolls into Lochaber

A fun packed day of seaside adventures, exploring and games with the Highland Seashore Project, together with Highland Ranger Service, bringing the Seashore Roadshow to Traigh Beach, Arisaig on the 24th July.

The Highland Seashore Project is working with the Highland Ranger Service and Local Community Groups to bring coastal Roadshows full of family fun to venues all around the Highlands. Each Roadshow will be different, based on the enthusiasm of local people and the spectacular nature of the coasts themselves. One thing they all have in common is a love of the seashore and a full timetable of activities for all ages.  Lochaber Roadshow is at Traigh Beach, which is well known for its white sands, rock pools full of life and stunning views of Eigg and Rhum.

On the 24th July Traigh Beach will have a plethora of activities exploring and discovering this amazing coast, with the Highland Ranger Service and other partners of the Highland Seashore Project. The day kicks off at 11.30am with the Sand Sculpture competition with artist Greg Dobson helping and judging at 2.30pm.

Well known story teller and Ardnamurchan native, George Macpherson will be weaving seashore tales throughout the afternoon. Join the Rangers for the strand line scavenger hunt and rock pool safari from 11.30am to 1pm, coupled with Bird Watching (so bring your binoculars), microscope fun and crafty crabs.  The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust will be onsite with lots of information and their portable dolphin! Bring a picnic or enjoy the purchase of soup and sandwiches from onsite caterers.

The Project was launched in February, 2013.  It is run by the Highland Biodiversity Partnership, and aims to encourage understanding and appreciation of our delicate seashores and the life that depends upon them.

Project Co-ordinator Janet Ullman said “This is the second roadshow in a series of six family orientated events this year. The Highland Seashore Project aims to encourage local people to discover the magnificent coastlines the Highlands possess and about the wide variety of life that clings to those shores.  We are already thinking about events for next year, so if you or your community want to get something happening at your local coast give me a call.

“We have had a great start to the project with lots of support and local enthusiasm.  The Highland Ranger Service have been vital to the Roadshows, they have been brilliant partners getting the Roadshows together with the Seashore Project, using their numerous skills and knowledge of local coasts. Contributions from the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and others, show how much important work is being done to show how our coasts and wildlife is being protected and we are grateful for their part in the project.”

The Roadshow starts at 11.30am, finishing at 3pm. Access Traigh beach on the B8008 between Mallaig and Arisaig, follow signs to car park, post code for Sat Navs PH3 4NT. Parking at the main beach car park for the beach. There are no toilets on site.
