Highland school in final of Poppyscotland competition.
A Highland High School is one of two finalists in “Moving stories” - Poppyscotland’s Education Competition 2012.
Kinlochbervie High School in Sutherland and Kemnay Academy in Aberdeenshire are the two finalists in the Scottish-wide film competition. Poppyscotland is inviting people to vote for a winner by picking their favourite film at http://www.poppyscotland.org.uk/education/public/competition/
The voting will close on 27 June 2013 and the winner will be announced the following day.
In 2012, Poppyscotland invited schools from across Scotland to create a script, storyboard or short film that represented their ideas on the theme “What does Remembrance mean today?”.
Finalists Kinlochbervie High and Kemnay Academy were given the opportunity to work with a professional filmmaker to bring their submitted ideas to life in a 2.38 minute long film.
Kinlochbervie High School’s film “Voices from War” is based on an original script created by pupils Olivia Corbett, Iona Laing and Beth MacKinnon. The film uses characters from different periods of time to voice each line of the script with dramatic effect.
The film is devised, performed and filmed by: Molly Birchnall, Olivia Corbett, Alick Elrick, James Flett, Harry Hird, Stuart Johnstone, Iona Laing, Fraser MacDonald, Beth MacKinnon, Craig MacKinnon, Derek Morrison, Cameron Munro, Spike Sutherland, Ian Thompson and Zoe Keith. The pupils were supported by Teachers Ms Susan Bewley and Mr Graeme Smart.
Councillor Carolyn Caddick, Highland Council’s Armed Forces and Veterans' Champion said: “Congratulations to Kinlochbervie High School for reaching the finals of Poppyscotland’s Education Competition. The pupils have done a great job capturing the meaning of Remembrance today. Their evocative video looks to the past and present, remembering families and those who have served their country and those who are still in active service.”
Head Teacher, Susan Robertson added: “All the pupils were really engaged in and motivated by their involvement with this project from researching and writing the script through to the filming. The project has been led by our English teacher, Susan Bewley and is yet another example of the creative ways in which she involves pupils in the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence. The icing on the cake would be for their film to win the Moving Stories competition. I am really proud of their film which has touched us all.”
