Invitation to discover Dark Skye
Highland landmarks to go dark in support of Earth Hour
To mark WWF’s Earth Hour on Saturday 23 March The Highland Council Rangers on Skye are inviting people to switch off their lights, grab a torch and come and join them outdoors for some astronomy and wildlife related fun.
Skye & Lochalsh Ranger Jenny Grant said: “We thought we would show our support to Earth Hour by hosting a Discover Dark Skye event and give people the chance to come and join us as we celebrate the wonders of our planet and beyond. We are going to have half an hour of astronomy followed by an hour walking along a nocturnal wildlife trail.”
Suitable for all ages, anyone interested should meet up at the Dark Skye Discovery Site at Camas na Sgianadain near Broadford at 8pm on Saturday 23 March and bring with them a torch and a sense of adventure. Running until 9.30pm the event is suitable for families and anyone coming along should make sure they are dressed warmly and wear walking boots or shoes.
The cost will be £3 for adults, £2 for children and £8 for families. For further information please contact Jenny Grant on 01471 820527.
The Highland Council has supported WWF’s Earth Hour each year since it began in 2008 and this year it will be switching off floodlights at local landmarks including Inverness, Eilean Donan and Urquhart Castles. Lighting at Inverness Cathedral, Ruthven Barracks, Ness Bridge, Packhorse Bridge, the A9 rock face at Aviemore and Spey Bridge in Grantown will also be turned off for the full weekend.
