Council to examine Zero Carbon status for Inverness

A project is planned in Inverness to make the city centre a carbon free area by 2025.

The “Zero Carbon” initiative has arisen from discussions by the 7 Cities Alliance, which features representatives from The Highland Council as well as councils covering Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Kinross and Stirling and aims to increase the wealth and wellbeing of Scotland’s cities.

The Highland Council Leader Councillor Drew Hendry said: “Working with our partner cities, we are developing projects that allow us to collaborate to boost the economies of our cities. We are bringing forward to Council a proposition that we achieve “Zero Carbon”  status for Inverness by 2025.  This challenging target will focus minds on how we change civic behaviour and promote good ideas, such as improved building insulation, more use of public transport, cycling and walking and initiatives to stimulate business and the economy by stimulating  different ways of doing business, including the use of next generation broadband.

“We are talking with the Inverness Business Improvement District, HIE, UHI and other agencies to see how they might like to see this being taken forward.”
