Inverness pupils are Euroquiz 2013 winners
A Highland Primary school team are the winners of the Scottish European Educational Trust’s Euroquiz, which was held yesterday (Monday 13 May) in the Scottish Parliament Debating Chamber.
Cradlehall Primary School from Inverness are this year’s Euroquiz winners who won a closely contested final round against the St Leonard's team from South Lanarkshire.
Team members Anna Taylor (captain), Logan Ewan, Paul Wilby and Adam MacArthur were among twenty nine primary schools that took part in the final from across Scotland.
Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Drew Hendry congratulates the Cradlehall Primary for their excellent achievement. Leader Hendry is Chair of the Highlands and Islands European Partnership; Sole UK representative to the European Union Political Bureau of the Committee of the Regions; and he also represents COSLA on the Council of the European Municipalities and Regions.
He said: “I am delighted that Cradlehall Primary has won Euroquiz 2013 for the Highlands. They are great ambassadors on raising awareness and knowledge of Europe and how its influence impacts upon Scotland which is increasingly important. We cannot underestimate the impact that Europe has on our everyday lives and on our children’s futures. As decision makers of the future, the Cradlehall pupils have shown that they are prepared with their wealth of European knowledge to be as prepared as possible to take advantage of the opportunities that exist with engagement in Europe.”
Euroquiz is a competition for Primary 6 pupils which helps them develop their knowledge of Europe and the European Union, as well as core skills such as communication and teamwork. Questions are asked on history, geography, current affairs, culture, sport and the European Union.
This year for the first time the quiz included a language round, encouraging the development of foreign language skills at primary level. The final is sponsored by the European Parliament and the Scottish Government as well as individual donors and Trusts.
The 29 finalist teams faced Quizmaster and Deputy Presiding Officer, Elaine Smith MSP in the Debating Chamber within the Scottish Parliament. James Temple-Smithson, Head of Office in Scotland of the European Parliament and Alyn Smith MEP read out the answers. Lawrence Sutherland, Head Teacher at Cradlehall Primary School in Inverness, representing Highland Council at the national finals of Euroquiz 2013 said, “We were all very proud of the team’s achievement at winning the Highland heat back in March, and our success yesterday in the Scottish Final caused great excitement in school. Anna, Paul, Adam and Logan have been working very hard during school hours and at home with what has proven to be a very wide-ranging syllabus.”
