Bird box building in Culloden Woods
On Wednesday (16 October) there will be a house building event with a difference when participants get the chance to help our feathered friends as they try their hand at making a wooden bird box.
The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers are holding the event in Culloden Woods from 10am – 12 noon and all tools and kits to build the boxes will be provided.
Inverness East and Nairn Highland Council Ranger John Orr said: “This is the right time of year to be building and putting up nest boxes. Birds will investigate them over the winter, a bit like you would view a house, and then choose one to use when spring eventually comes. Only very basic carpentry skills which anyone can master quickly are needed and I’ll be there to help and provide assistance.”
The cost will be £6 per nest box. There is no need to book in advance so anyone wanting to come along should meet up at the Culloden Woods car park off Tower Road (Grid reference NH 718456) at 10am on Wednesday. Any children wishing to join in must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
For more information please give John Orr a call on 01463 255291 otherwise just turn up on the day.
The Countryside Rangers run many events and guided walks which aim to help raise awareness and encourage appreciation of the scenery, wildlife and heritage of the Highlands. A programme of Ranger Guided Walks and Events is on the council’s website at: http://www.highland.gov.uk/countrysiderangerevents.htm
