Opportunity to join the Board of High Life Highland

Two opportunities have arisen for people with an interest in community learning and leisure services in Highland communities to become involved as Directors of the Board of High Life Highland to deliver these services on behalf of The Highland Council.

High Life Highland (HLH) is a charity registered in Scotland and a company, limited by guarantee, wholly owned by the Council.  Its purpose is to develop and promote opportunities in culture, learning, sport, leisure, health and wellbeing.

It was set up in 2011 to deliver a suite of Community Learning and Leisure Services on behalf of The Highland Council including Adult Learning, Museums, Archives, Outdoor Education, Arts, Sport, Leisure Facilities, Youth Work and Libraries.

The memorandum and Articles of Association of the company requires that two independent Board directors step down after completing their service, so the vacancies have arisen due to Directors John Watt and Linda Kirkland standing down. The Board is therefore looking for two people who can provide strategic direction and governance to the company and expert advice and support to its management team.

Applications would be particularly welcome from individuals with a good track record in business or community management and experience of leading a team within a company or community organisation. Knowledge of the cultural, learning and/or leisure sector in the Highlands and relevant business skills that could contribute to the development of the company including financial, legal, property, personnel, marketing, ICT and general management skills would also be desirable.

Directors are unpaid but reasonable expenses will be available with induction and training given to the successful candidates.  Preference will be given to applicants who are resident within the Scottish Highlands. Appointments are not open to employees of The Highland Council or High Life Highland.

Anyone interested in an informal chat regarding High Life Highland should give the Chief Executive Ian Murray a call on 01463 663824. Application packs are available by e-mailing jane.maclennan@highland.gov.uk or telephoning 01463 702132.

The closing date for applications is Monday 11 November.  Interviews will take place on 6 December and appointments will be made at The Highland Council meeting on 19 December.
