Musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra pass on their skills to young Highlanders

Prior to their evening concert in Eden Court last Friday, some musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra too some time out to pass on their professional skills and knowledge to some young musicians who receive their tuition from The Highland Council’s Instrumental Tuition Service.

Pupils taking part in the special workshop were:

Norman Bolton, the Council’s Music Development Officer said:  “Whilst pupils in Highland are given tuition of the highest standards in their schools, the chance to spend time with musicians of the calibre in RSNO is an opportunity which doesn’t happen every day.  We have begun a year-long collaboration with RSNO and this workshop opportunity was the first of a number of initiatives over the course of the year.  RSNO musicians will also visit rehearsals of Highland Young Musicians groups (formerly Highland Regional Music Groups) on 20th & 21st September and work with them during their rehearsal weekend.  This will be the first of a number of visits throughout the HYM calendar.”

2013 is the 25th anniversary of Highland Young Musicians and the group which started it all off (Highland Regional Youth Orchestra) is playing a major part in the special events planned for this session under the conductorship of Garry Walker, leading to their first concert of the season in November.  For the second part of their season, they will be under the baton of the RSNO’s recently appointed Assistant Conductor, Jean-Claude Picard.  Other groups in the HYM stable will also have special performances at either the Concerts Festival on 23rd November in the Macdonald Aviemore Resort, or their March Festival in Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
