Smithton and Culloden flood alleviation scheme
Works start next week on the latest phase of the flood alleviation measures in Smithton and Culloden, Inverness.
The Highland Council is pleased to announce that Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd has been awarded the £158K contract to implement designs by JBA Consulting.
The works will take approximately 12 weeks to complete and include measures on both the Culloden Burn West and Tower Burn.
The current phase of works is focusing on the installation of a coarse debris screen on both the Culloden Burn West, at Culloden Wood, and on the Tower Burn, at Rowan Grove. These coarse debris screens will aid in preventing woody debris and large stones from being washed down stream to locations where culverts have been blocked in the past.
In addition to the coarse debris screens, the security/debris screen at Culloden Centre is also being replaced with a new screen designed to current standards. The new screen will have a greater surface area allowing higher volumes of debris to be collected without blocking the culvert inlet, as well as being easier and safer for maintenance teams to clear.
Leader of the City of Inverness Councillor Ian Brown said: “I am very pleased to see that these works are starting. We gave commitments at public meetings held in Culloden to ensure that flood alleviation schemes are put in place accordingly for the area. These current site works are key factors in making the community safer from potential flooding.”
Detailed design of further phases of the Flood Alleviation Scheme for Smithton and Culloden is on-going.
The council has written to around 60 nearby neighbours to inform them that the works are commencing. Inverness East flood information is available on the Council’s website.
