Highland young consumer team wins local heat

The winning teamA team from Fortrose Academy are winners of the Highland Young Consumer of the Year Competition 2015 which was held today (Wednesday, 10 December) at The Highland Council Chamber in Inverness.
 
Fortrose Academy and Golspie High School were put to the test by Quiz Master, Bryan Bain, Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau.  Teams answered questions on money and credit, consumer law, food and safety and the environment. 

The event has been organised by the Highland Council’s Trading Standards Team in partnership with Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau and Citizens Advice Scotland.

The winning team were Oscar William Barnett; Ben Beasley; Ron Coggins and Lorcan Downing James who will now go on to represent Highland in the Scottish Young Consumer of the Year Competition which will take place at the Scottish Parliament in March 2015.   

Individual prizes were sponsored by Citizens Advice Scotland and included a £10.00 shopping voucher.  

Councillor Linda Munro, The Highland Council’s Children's and Young People’s Champion, who also attended the quiz along with other invited guests said:  “I would like to thank all those who took part in the competition and to Highland Council Trading Standards and Citizens Advice Scotland (Highland) staff for organising the event. Our thanks must also go to Bryan Bain from Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau for taking on the role of Quizmaster for the day.” 

She added: “Taking part in the competition is a great way for youngsters to learn valuable life skills and knowledge covering a whole range of topics such as money and credit; shopping rights; social responsibility issues and information keeping health and safe.  It is also a fun way to learn and teams from all over the Highlands have an opportunity to meet up and make friends.”
