Refurbishment of Alexandra Footbridge

Works to refurbish the Alexandra Bridge at Tain are expected to start on Monday 20 April and will last for 16 weeks. Maclean & Speirs have been awarded the contract to carry out the works. During this time the bridge will be closed.

In 2011, the bridge was closed for a period, due to safety concerns, and while temporary works allowed it to be re-opened a long term solution was required.

Funding to fully refurbish the bridge has been provided by the Tain Common Good Fund, Historic Scotland, Tain Community Council, The Highland Council’s Capital Programme and Ward Discretionary Budget.

The works will fully restore this much loved, decorative, wire-rope suspension bridge, which was originally made by one of the most important engineering foundries in the Highlands - Rose Street Foundry of Inverness. It is because of its historic importance that the Bridge has been awarded Grade B listed status.

The bridge will be closed during the works but access to the Links shore path and the river path to the golf course will be unaffected.
