Buildings of Special Architectural Interest in Thurso

Councillors have agreed to take action to ensure the necessary repair and renovation of a listed building in Thurso town centre.

The Highland Council's Caithness Area Committee is concerned at the deteriorating condition of the building at 30 Princes Street / 7 Sir John’s Square which is in private ownership.

Councillors decided on Monday to take immediate action to ensure that the building is made safe and to recoup from the owners the costs of the works.

A spokesman said: “The Committee noted that despite action being taken by the owner in response to formal notices served upon him by The Highland Council in order to make the building safe, the building remains at risk.

“Scaffolding has been re-erected on the instruction of the Council following observation of a number of new defects, and councillors expressed concern and frustration in relation to the ongoing situation.  They agreed the suggested course of action open to the Council in terms of the legislation and instructed officials to take the action recommended in the report.”
