Council Leader responds to refugee crisis
Welcoming the UK
Governments response to accept more Syrian refugees and the setting up of a
special Task Force by the First Minister, Leader of The Highland Council,
Councillor Margaret Davidson said: “I am sure many people across Highland are
very moved by the desperate situation of the refugees, and like me, strongly
feel we should be doing something to ease their plight and play our part in
alleviating this humanitarian crisis.
“Here in Highland we will be working with our partners to explore what
practical assistance can be given. I am meeting with Political Group Leaders of
the Council tomorrow to look at what practical assistance we may be able to
provide. This will explore matters including clothing, housing and social
services. A representative from the Blythswood charity will be joining us as
they have considerable expertise and experience in providing support aid.
She added: “This is a wider and more complex issue than resettling people in
the UK – Europe needs practical and sustainable solutions to the root cause as
well as addressing the immediate needs and safety of people closer to their
home country.”
