Wick Beachwatch 2015

Pupils from Hillhead Primary in Wick, took part in the national Marine Conservations Society’s Beachwatch project on Monday (21 September). The event, organised by The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers, launched the start of ‘Wick Waves’, a week’s long ‘sea’ themed events taking place in Wick.

Pupils from Primary 6 spent the morning collecting and recording litter at the North Baths. The data will help Marine Conservation Society identify the main sources of litter at the North Baths shore area and keep the issue of the dangers of marine litter high on the local agenda.

The beach litter survey recorded a total of 633 items. The top item found on the day was plastic bottles with 213 bottles collected.

Marina Swanson, the local Countryside Ranger said: “The Hillhead pupils did a fantastic job of collecting the litter and recording their finds. It was amazing to see all the rubbish gathered together as initially we were unaware there was so much there. The pupils have helped make the beach a cleaner and safer place to visit for both people and wildlife. I’d like to thank them all very much for their effort and help on the day.”
