Silver Eco Award For Highland Primary

Kirkhill Primary School has been presented with a Silver Award from Eco-Schools Scotland for their efforts to improve their whole school environment.

Over the past year the school community has been involved, in addition to their normal curricular work, in recycling paper, composting, collecting litter for house-points, improving the existing garden area, posters to encourage everyone to walk or cycle to school, turn off taps and lights, wash hands and eat healthily.  A weekly fresh fruit tuck shop is run by SNAG (School Nutrition Action Group).

Headteacher of the 159 pupil school, Mrs Ford said:  “This is a great achievement by everyone in the school, especially as our Eco-Schools Committee was only formed last September.  I would like to give special credit to our principal teacher, Mrs Jean Gibson, who is responsible for setting up and organising all our Eco Schools activities.

“As well as setting up and promoting recycling facilities, undertaking litter patrols and making the whole school as eco-friendly as possible, in March the Committee helped in the preparations for the Highland Environment Network Annual Conference which took place at our school.

“A new Committee has been formed for this year and I am sure the new members will be very enthusiastically aiming to continue and develop the good work done so far as they aim for the highest accolade of a Green Flag Award.”

Eco-improvements to the school grounds include a living willow fence, raised beds for fruit and vegetable growing, a wildflower area, wormery and a tepee where small groups can sit and chat at break times.
