Rio Tinto assets in Lochaber

The Highland Council's Lochaber Area Leader Cllr Thomas MacLennan expressed his deep concern following the news of the strategic review of Rio Tinto assets in Lochaber.

He said: “The Rio Tinto smelter is the last remaining aluminium smelter in the UK and as such, is of significant economic importance, not only to the West Highland area, but far beyond. It has long been part of our local economy and is one of the largest employers in the area.

“I am grateful to the owners for keeping us well informed of their plans and the Council has offered to assist in every way we can in the review, together with our partners at HIE and in the local community.”
