At the Scottish Concert Band Festival finals held in Perth Concert Hall over the weekend, Lochaber High School Senior Wind Band were awarded 1st equal with a Gold+ award in the Achieving School Band class. Also competing were the Highland Youth Wind Band who were awarded Gold and 2nd place in the Advanced Youth Band class.

Both the Highland groups are conducted by Highland Council brass Instructor Mark Reynolds who is based in the Lochaber area. The Lochaber band is also tutored by Karen Thomson, woodwind Instructor in the area whilst the Highland Youth Wind Band has a number of additional tutors from Highland Councils Instrumental Tuition Service.

Norman Bolton, the Councils Music Development Officer said: “Both bands gave fantastic performances and were a credit to Highland Councils Instrumental Tuition Service and the hard work of the staff who tutor our young musicians. An event such as this is an ideal opportunity for Highland musicians to hear groups from other areas and I was incredibly proud of our achievements this weekend."

Applications are now open for membership of all Highland Young Musicians groups in session 2016/17. Application/information leaflets can be obtained from Council Music Instructors; Secondary Music departments or by emailing: hym@highland.gov.uk
