New bin collection calendars now available on Highland Council website!

New waste and recycling collection calendars for 2016-2018 are now available on The Highland Council’s website and at Service Points. The calendars can be downloaded and printed out from www.highland.gov.uk/bindays Type in your street address and the appropriate calendar will appear. If you have a garden waste collection, you can also find your brown bin collection calendar this way.

Householders are encouraged to have a look at the guide on the rear side of the calendar that shows the range of items that can now be recycled using the blue recycling bin. In addition to paper, cardboard, food tins, drink cans and plastic bottles householders are reminded that plastic pots, tubs and trays, food and drink cartons (Tetrapaks) and envelopes can also be recycled in the blue bins.

All the materials in the blue bin must be clean, dry and loose with NO plastic bags. Glass bottles and jars should continue to be taken to one of The Highland Council’s network of glass Recycling Points.

The blue bin material is transported to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Evanton, Ross-shire where it is sorted. The separated materials are then sent for reprocessing into new items, for example all of the newsprint used in the UK contains around 78% of recycled paper.

Councillor Alan Henderson said “In the last year nearly 17,000 tonnes of recycling has been collected in the blue bins from households across the region. It’s great to see so many people recycling more materials. Using your blue bin means that you will have more space in your green refuse bin each week as well as doing your bit for the environment by reducing the amount of rubbish that is sent to landfill.”
