The Music Never Ends - Highland young musicians perform at top national level

The recent Easter holidays were a time for many young people to have a chance to participate in interesting activities away from school – and none more so than many of the very talented musicians who hail from Highland.

A good number of current and former members of Highland Young Musicians groups have been successful in gaining places in one of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) ensembles this year. These ensembles work at the highest levels and whilst not all Highland Young Musicians members aspire to this, the ones who make the commitment gain unparalleled experience at both rehearsal and performance stages of the spring and summer courses.

The Highland Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Perth Concert Hall performance given by the NYOS Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Alpesh Chauhan and was delighted to see a healthy proportion of the Orchestras’ members hailing from Highland. He said: “Te ensemble playing and musicality of this group were outstanding in what was a very demanding programme. It is heartening to know that so many of its players have been given a solid start to their musical aspirations in Highland schools and through Highland Young Musicians groups.”

Highland Young Musicians groups are just about to embark on the audition process for 2016/17 membership. Further information can be found at: www.highland-young-musicians.com and members of the appropriate standard must simply be pupils at Highland schools. Applications are particularly welcome for Highland Youth Choir & Còisir G. Application forms can still be obtained by emailing: hym@highland.gov.uk – but the closing date is imminent!
