Developing economic links Augsburg – Inverness

Work to develop economic relationships between the twinned cities of Inverness and Augsburg - through groundwork undertaken by the Town Twinning Committee and the Inverness City Area Manager - received a boost today when members of The Highland Council’s City of Inverness Area Committee approved £5,000 Inverness Common Good Funding towards further research.

The Council’s Development and Infrastructure Service has already commissioned a Munich-based consultant, DS Consulting, to carry out research into examining the potential for developing economic links between the twinned cities in the life sciences and health care sectors and this additional support from the city committee will help expand upon that work.

Provost and Leader of Inverness Area, Cllr Helen Carmichael said: “Earlier this year, we marked the diamond anniversary of Inverness and Augsburg’s twinning with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of the Highlands and Islands and Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. This collaboration formed the basis for future collaboration on academic and research matters.

“We continue to work with our partners in the Centre for Health Science at Raigmore, the University of the Highlands and Islands, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise and look forward to welcoming representatives from the major medical facility, Klinikum Augsburg to Inverness in October on a reciprocal visit.”

Members of the City of Inverness Area Committee endorsed the exploratory work being carried out by Highland Council and partners into identifying future economic development opportunities for the twinned cities of Augsburg and Inverness.
