Council commends War Memorials’ awards
In the week before Remembrance Day, Members of The Highland Council’s Community Services have commended the achievements of local communities and council staff in maintaining two key war memorials in the Highlands at Drumnadrochit and Nairn.
Members were delighted to hear that in the Legion Scotland, Best Kept War Memorial Campaign 2016, Drumnadrochit War Memorial was awarded Champion of Champions.
Also in the Large Community with Gardens category, Nairn War Memorial was awarded joint winner with Saltcoats War Memorial.
Legion Scotland annually runs a Best Kept War Memorial campaign for Legion Scotland-sponsored war memorials. The competition aims to encourage communities to look after their local war memorials which are an integral part of the nation’s remembrance of people who have given up their lives for their country.
Cllr Allan Henderson, Chair of the Council’s Community Services Committee said: “Congratulations to all the volunteers and council staff who have helped to keep Drumnadrochit and Nairn War Memorial gardens in tip-top condition. They put on excellent floral displays each year and keep the memorials in a beautiful and fitting condition which is appreciated all year round but especially at this time of year as we mark Remembrance Day.”
