Pupils take part in successful Gaelic careers day on Skye
A Careers Day took place at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, which was formally opened by Mr John Norman Macleod, Vice Principal/ Director of Academic Studies at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on Skye.
The annual event - ‘SIUTHAD!’– GO ON!’ is aimed at both Gaelic Learners and Fluent speakers. ‘SIUTHAD!’ showcases a range of Gaelic related careers and encourages young people to continue with their Gaelic studies.
‘SIUTHAD’!’ is a partnership between The Highland Council, Skills Development Scotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and is organised by the Council’s Gaelic Team, Skills Development Scotland(SDS) and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
There were 35 Gaelic learners and fluent speakers from both Portree and Plockton Secondary Schools present at the event.
A number of national organisations took part including Bòrd na Gàidhlig, HIE, Highlife Highland, FilmG and SDS. The organisations gave comprehensive advice on the opportunities available in relation to studying and learning Gaelic, as the language adds value, enhances and creates future employment opportunities for the young people.
Councillor Hamish Fraser, Chair of the Council’s Gaelic Implementation Group said: “The SIUTHAD! Event was very successful as it provided a platform for the young people in Secondary Education in the West Coast to see and interact with agencies who have a remit and responsibility for career promotion.”
He added, “A number of the agencies present lead innovative and interactive sessions, which included the media, sport, and drama. I believe that SIUTHAD!, is an example of best practice as it showcases opportunities for young people who may wish to continue to study Gaelic and follow a career path in the Gaelic and Cultural sector. We are also grateful for the financial support ‘SIUTHAD!’ receives from both Bòrd na Gàidhlig and HIE as it ensures that the event takes place on a regular basis.”
