New Highland Youth Gaelic Choir
The Highland Council is delighted to announce that members for its 7th Regional Music Group are now being recruited.
The new Highland Youth Gaelic Choir (HYGC) will be holding auditions on 10th January 2009 and applications are now being invited from pupils currently studying at any of the areas secondary schools.
The HYGC will have its first rehearsal weekend on 16th and 17th January, using the same rehearsal calendar as existing groups.
“I am hopeful that this new group will be as popular as the others we run are now proving to be” said The Highland Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton. “I have been waiting to hear the outcome of funding applications which would enable us to get the choir started, hence the very tight timescale before its first rehearsal.”
It is hoped that the choir will attract enough applicants to have around thirty members initially.
“The musical and social benefits of being a member of any of our Regional Music Groups are beyond compare” said Norman. “Being able to spend time in such activities with like-minded peers and receiving such a high quality musical experience is something which can inspire and motivate many pupils who may not have suitable local opportunities available to them. I am delighted that Eilidh Mackenzie (Barker) has agreed to become the choir’s
leader/conductor and am looking forward to working with her.”
The funding for this group has been granted by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Friends of Highland Music.
Application packs are now available from all Highland secondary schools, or can be requested by contacting Angeline Walker on 01349 868271. Forms have to be returned by 19th December 2008.
