Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis are the Cuach na Cloinne 2012 Winners

Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis are the Cuach na Cloinne 2012 winners after an excellent and very close competition. The finals of the competition were held in Fort William last weekend where the top 10 teams from Gaelic schools throughout Scotland battled it out for the 2012 trophy. After a very tough competition schools from Back, Lewis, Craighill, Tain, Portree, Skye and Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis won their way through to the semi-finals with Sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis eventually beating Portree Primary School 2-0 in the final.
Donald MacNeil, Chief Executive of Comunn na Gàidhlig, which organises the annual competition said, “We have had a really exciting competition, all the way from the six regional competitions we have held over the past couple of months through to the finals which we had in Fort William at the weekend. It is very apparent that the competition is enjoyed by not only the children but also by the accompanying adults. It is so refreshing to be amongst the children chatting away to each other in Gaelic and just having a really good tìme. This is one of the key drivers behind the competition, providing young Gaels with the opportunity to use their language outwith the classroom, and to see that Gaelic is used across Scotland and not only within their own communities. We are grateful to the schools for their continuing support and also to the funders who make it possible for us to organise the competition. This year’s funders were Bòrd na Gàidhlig, The Highland Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and MG ALBA. We hope to be back early in 2013 with Cuach na Cloinne 2013!”
David Boag, Head of Gaelic Usage at Bòrd na Gàidhlig said, “It is important to Bòrd na Gàidhlig there is a wide range of activities available to young people who are going through Gaelic medium education, to enable them to develop their language skills through use outwith the classroom. Cuach na Cloinne is now a leading event in the school year and we are delighted to have supported it.”
Local Highland Councillor, Brian Murphy for the Fort William and Ardnamurchan Ward congratulated all the teams that took part and presented the trophies. He said: “This competition is a great way for the Council to support young Gaelic learners and their families within our communities and for them to have fun while learning the language and to mix with others not just within their own local areas but further afield.”
In addition to the Cuach na Cloinne trophy, held by the winning school for a year, MG ALBA trophies were presented to the finalists Portree Primary School and winners, Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis, which will be retained as permanent reminders of the teams’ success.
